Vienna—U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry chats with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov before talks with 17 nations, the European Union and the United Nations here on October 30, to seek a political solution to the war in Syria. It was the first major diplomatic push to solve the crisis since Russia began airstrikes in September in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Iran was invited to the talks, despite the objections of Saudi Arabia and others who consider Tehran’s support for Assad as meddling. The U.S. also said it would send dozens of special operations troops to Syria.slideshow
